ADSL2+ – What is it?
ADSL stands for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line. It is a technology that uses the copper wire network to enable a broadband service to be delivered via a dedicated line from your premises to a telephone exchange. ADSL is a high bandwidth downstream service, coupled with a lower bandwidth upstream service. ADSL2+ is a high speed service that extends the capability of basic ADSL.
Where is it available? ADSL2+ is available to those customers connected directly to Torquay, Pialba and Maryborough Telstra exchanges. Please contact Widelinx to find out if ADSL2+ is available to you.
ADSL2+ Speeds The theoretical maximum download speed for ADSL2+ is 24Mbps, however this is a maximum that can only be provided to some users under limited conditions. The data rates that are available are affected by many factors, and some by quite significant amounts including
• The length of copper wire from the exchange
• The number of, and type of, other services being used over copper pairs in the same cable by other customers
• The configuration and line quality of the copper wire pair between the exchange and your premises
• The software configuration and application on your computer (in particular how it uses the uplink back to the exchange)
• The hardware or modem that you use
• The capacity of, load on, and access data rate of the destination host computer you wish to access
Due to the above factors, it is not possible to categorically state the download speed that you will achieve, however typical tests identify the minimum speeds achieved are far in excess of standard ADSL maximum speeds. The maximum upload speed achievable on Widelinx’ ADSL2+ service is 1.2Mbps with most customers achieving rates of 512Kbps or greater.
